The Divine Mercy Chaplet is one of the most powerful prayers in the Catholic faith — a plea for God’s mercy “on us and on the whole world.” Jesus revealed it to St. Faustina Kowalska in 1935 and attached extraordinary promises to all who pray it, especially during the Hour of Mercy at three o’clock. It is considered so powerful not because of any magic in the words, but because of those promises and the simple act of trust it asks of us. Below you’ll find the full chaplet to pray right now, the promises Jesus made, and an explanation of why this short prayer carries such weight.

How to Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet

Like all of our online prayers, you begin at the top — here, the Sign of the Cross — and pray straight through to the Closing Prayer at the bottom. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is a very powerful prayer and can be prayed daily, often right after the daily Rosary.

Prayer Intentions

Prayer intentions are mentioned first. If none come to mind, you can always pray for the conversion of sinners, or for the intentions of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

You can offer the Divine Mercy Chaplet for any intention, but Jesus singled out a few for St. Faustina. The chaplet is prayed especially:

For the dying — at the bedside of someone near death, or for the dying everywhere
For the conversion of sinners, the intention Jesus called most pleasing to Him
For your own family, country, and the whole world
For the sick and suffering, and for souls in purgatory
For mercy in your own life — in trial, fear, or after sin, praying “Jesus, I trust in You”

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

(When you say Father touch your forehead, Son touch your chest or stomach, Holy touch your left shoulder, and Spirit touch your right shoulder).

Opening Prayers

You expired, Jesus,
but the source of life gushed forth for souls,
and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world.
O Fount of Life,
unfathomable Divine Mercy,
envelop the whole world and empty  Yourself out upon us.

Repeat 3 Times

O Blood and Water,
which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of Mercy for us,
I trust in You!

Our Father

Our Father,
Who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary,
full of grace.
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Apostles Creed

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ,
His only Son,
our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
He descended into hell;
on the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.

Understanding the Divine Mercy Chaplet

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy stands as a beacon of hope within the Catholic faith, giving every sinner a way to call on the boundless mercy of Jesus Christ. In the guide below, we walk through where the chaplet came from, what each prayer means, how and when to pray it — including at three o’clock, the Hour of Mercy — and the promises Our Lord attached to it so that the chaplet can become a trusted part of your prayer life.

Jesus I Trust in Thee - After Adolf Hyla - 1952
Jesus I Trust in Thee - After Adolf Hyla - 1952

At the heart of this devotion is the image Jesus asked Saint Faustina to have painted: Christ stepping toward us, one hand raised in blessing and the other touching His heart, from which two rays stream out — one red, one pale. The red ray recalls the Blood that is the life of souls; the pale ray, the Water that makes souls righteous. Beneath the image are the words Our Lord requested: “Jesus, I trust in You.” The painting is not an object of worship but a vessel of trust — a reminder of where to bring our weakness for mercy.

History of the Chaplet

The Chaplet of the Divine Mercy is based on the mystical experiences of Saint Faustina Kowalska, a humble nun from Poland who lived in the early 20th century. Through visions and revelations, Jesus Christ revealed His desire for a special devotion centered on His boundless mercy. He instructed St Faustina to paint an image depicting Him with rays of red and pale light emanating from His merciful heart, with the inscription, “Jesus, I trust in You.”

It was her confessor and spiritual director, Blessed Fr. Michael Sopocko, who took the vision seriously and arranged for it to be rendered: in 1934, under St. Faustina’s direction, the artist Eugeniusz Kazimirowski completed the first Divine Mercy image in Vilnius. The version most Catholics know today — the one shown here — was painted later by Adolf Hyła for the convent chapel at Kraków-Łagiewniki, and it was Hyła’s image that carried copies of the devotion around the world.

From Divine Mercy in my Soul:

474

In the evening, when I was in my cell, I saw an Angel, the executor of divine wrath.  He was clothed in a dazzling robe, his face gloriously bright, a cloud beneath his feet. From the cloud, bolts of thunder and flashes of lightning were springing into his hands; and from his hand they were going forth, and only then were they striking the earth. When I saw this sign of divine wrath which was about to strike the earth, and in particular a certain place, which for good reasons I cannot name, I began to implore the Angel to hold off for a few moments, and the world would do penance. But my plea was a mere nothing in the face of the divine anger. Just then I saw the Most Holy Trinity. The greatness of Its majesty pierced me deeply, and I did not dare to repeat my entreaties. At that very moment I felt in my soul the power of Jesus’ grace, which dwells in my soul. When I became conscious of this grace, I was instantly snatched up before the Throne of God. Oh, how great is our Lord and God and how incomprehensible His holiness! I will make no attempt to describe this greatness, because before long we shall all see Him as He is. I found myself pleading with (197) God for the world with words heard interiorly. As I was praying in this manner, I saw the Angel’s helplessness: he could not carry out the just punishment which was rightly due for sins. Never before had I prayed with such inner power as I did then.

475

The words with which I entreated God are these: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved son, Our Lord Jesus Christ for our sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us.

476

The next morning, when I entered chapel, I heard these words interiorly: Every time you enter the chapel, immediately recite the prayer which I taught you yesterday. When I had said the prayer, in my soul I heard these words: This prayer will serve to appease My  wrath. You will recite it for nine days, on the beads of the rosary, in the following manner: First of all, you will say one OUR FATHER and HAIL MARY and the I BELIEVE IN GOD. Then on the OUR FATHER beads you will say the following words: “Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.” On the HAIL MARY beads you will say the following words: “For the sake of His sorrowful Passion have mercy on us and on the whole world.” In conclusion, three times you will recite these words: “Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

Prayers of the Chaplet

Central to the Chaplet of Divine Mercy are prayers that express trust in Jesus Christ as the source of infinite mercy and redemption for all humanity. The chaplet begins with the Sign of the Cross and recitation of the Apostles’ Creed, followed by the Our Father, Hail Mary, and the “Eternal Father” and “For the sake of His sorrowful Passion” prayers. Each prayer carries profound significance, inviting believers to meditate on the salvific work of Jesus Christ and His unfathomable mercy poured out for the salvation of souls.

Understanding the Prayers of the Chaplet

Praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is a simple yet profound practice that invites believers into a deeper relationship with God. Using ordinary rosary beads, believers begin by reciting the introductory prayers, then meditate on the mysteries of Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection while repeating the central prayers of the chaplet. Through the repetition of these prayers, believers express their trust in Jesus’ mercy and desire to obtain grace for themselves and the whole world.

The Hour of Mercy - Praying at 3 o'clock

Three o’clock in the afternoon — the hour Jesus died on the Cross — is traditionally called the Hour of Mercy, and it is an especially fitting time to pray the chaplet. It is not required: the chaplet can be prayed at any hour of the day or night, and Our Lord asked Saint Faustina to pray for mercy almost unceasingly. But pausing at three o’clock, even briefly, to recall His Passion and ask mercy on the whole world unites your prayer to the very moment of our redemption. This brief 3 o’clock prayer — even just recalling His Passion and asking for mercy for the whole world — is itself a powerful way to keep the Divine Mercy Chaplet present throughout the day.

Meaning and Significance of the Chaplet

At its core, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy embodies the profound truth of God’s infinite love and compassion for humanity. Through the chaplet, believers are invited to enter the mystery of God’s endless mercy, trusting in His promise to forgive sins and heal wounded hearts. The chaplet serves as a powerful means of intercession, as poor sinners pray not only for themselves but also for the conversion and salvation of souls throughout the world.

Promises of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy

Jesus attached remarkable promises to the Divine Mercy Chaplet, recorded by St. Faustina in her diary, “Divine Mercy in My Soul”. They are often summarized as the “fourteen promises,” and they return again and again to one theme — mercy at the hour of death, both for the soul who prays the chaplet and for the dying at whose side it is prayed. The most commonly cited promises appear below, each referenced to its entry in the Diary.

  1. Whoever venerates the image of Divine Mercy will not perish, and will be granted victory over their enemies — especially at the hour of death. (Diary, 48)
  2. The two rays of Blood and Water shield souls from the Father’s wrath; through them, the Feast of Mercy was given to the world. (Diary, 299)
  3. On the Feast of Mercy, the soul that goes to Confession and receives Holy Communion obtains complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary, 699)
  4. Whoever prays the chaplet will receive great mercy at the hour of death. (Diary, 687)
  5. Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope; even the most hardened sinner who prays it only once will receive grace. (Diary, 687)
  6. Those who say His mercy will embrace the chaplet throughout life, and especially at the hour of death. (Diary, 754)
  7. Souls who spread the honor of His mercy will be met at death not by the just Judge, but by the Merciful Savior. (Diary, 1075)
  8. The prayer most pleasing to Him is prayer for the conversion of sinners, and such prayer is always heard. (Diary, 1397)
  9. To priests who proclaim His mercy, He will give wondrous power and anoint their words. (Diary, 1521)
  10. Those who glorify and spread devotion to His mercy will not know terror at the hour of death. (Diary, 1540)
  11. When hardened sinners pray it, He will fill their souls with peace and make their death a happy one. (Diary, 1541)
  12. When the chaplet is prayed at the bedside of the dying, He stands between the Father and that soul as the Merciful Savior. (Diary, 1541)
  13. Through the chaplet, we will obtain everything we ask, provided it accords with His will. (Diary, 1731)
  14. His mercy is greater than our sins and those of the whole world. (Diary, 1485)

Benefits of Praying the Chaplet

Praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy yields numerous spiritual benefits, including deepening faith, inner peace, and an outpouring of God’s grace. Through the chaplet, believers receive unimaginable graces and blessings, as Jesus promised to Saint Faustina Kowalska: “The souls that say this chaplet will be embraced by My mercy during their lifetime and especially at the hour of their death.”

Praying the Chaplet for Healing and Personal Intentions

Many of the faithful turn to the chaplet in times of sickness and pray it for healing — for themselves, for loved ones, and especially for the dying. It is also prayed for personal intentions of every kind: a struggling marriage, work and provision, the conversion of someone we love. The chaplet is not promised as a guaranteed cure, and it is never a substitute for medical care; it is a prayer of trust that places every need, our health among them, into the hands of the One whose mercy is greater than any affliction. Whatever we ask through it, when it accords with God’s will, we are encouraged to ask with confidence (Diary, 1731) — keeping our loved ones, our intentions, and the whole world in our hearts as we pray.

Divine Mercy Sunday

Divine Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the Second Sunday of Easter, the Octave Day of Easter. In her Diary, Saint Faustina recorded Our Lord’s request for a Feast of Mercy on the first Sunday after Easter, and Pope Saint John Paul II established it for the whole Church on April 30, 2000 — the same day he canonized her. To this feast, Our Lord attached a singular grace: the soul that goes to Confession and receives Holy Communion on that day is promised complete forgiveness of both sins and punishment (Diary, 699). Many of the faithful prepare for it by praying the Divine Mercy Novena, beginning on Good Friday, so that the chaplet they have prayed through Lent and Easter culminates in the feast itself.

Divine Mercy Novena: How to Pray It

One way to prepare for Divine Mercy Sunday is the Divine Mercy Novena. The chaplet is prayed each day for nine days, beginning on Good Friday and ending on the Saturday before the feast. Our Lord asked St. Faustina to bring a different group of souls to His mercy on each of the nine days:

  • Day 1 — Good Friday: All people, and especially sinners
  • Day 2: — Priests and religious
  • Day 3: — All devout and faithful souls
  • Day 4: — Those who do not yet believe in God, and those who do not yet know Christ
  • Day 5: — Those who have separated themselves from the Church
  • Day 6: — The meek and humble, and the souls of little children
  • Day 7: — Those who especially venerate and spread devotion to His mercy
  • Day 8: — The souls detained in purgatory
  • Day 9: — Souls who have grown lukewarm

On each day, bring that day’s souls to mind, then pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet as you would at any other time. Many of the faithful begin the novena at three o’clock, the Hour of Mercy, so that the chaplet they have prayed through Lent and Easter culminates in the feast itself.

Why the Divine Mercy Chaplet Is So Powerful

The Divine Mercy Chaplet is considered so powerful not because of any single dramatic story, but because of the promises Our Lord himself attached to it and the simple act of trust it asks of us. From its earliest days, it has been cherished as a prayer of consolation in life’s hardest moments — at sickbeds, in times of fear, and at the hour of death — bringing our weakness, again and again, to the fountain of His mercy. That is why countless Catholics make it a daily prayer.

Important Excerpts from Divine Mercy in my Soul

Assistance to the Dying

810   The following afternoon, when I entered the ward, I saw someone dying, and learned that the agony had started during the night. When I verified it – it had been at the time when (204) I had been asked for prayer. And just then, I heard a voice in my soul: Say the chaplet which I taught you. I ran to fetch my rosary and knelt down by the dying person and, with all the ardor of my soul, I began to say the chaplet. Suddenly the dying person opened her eyes and looked at me; I had not managed to finish the entire chaplet when she died, with extraordinary peace. I fervently asked the Lord to fulfill the promise

He had given me for the recitation of the chaplet. The Lord gave me to know that the soul had been granted the grace. He had promised me. That was the first soul to receive the benefit of the Lord’s promise. I could feel the power of mercy envelop that soul.

811   When I entered my solitude, I heard these words: At the hour of their death, I defend as My own glory every soul that will say this chaplet; or when others say it for a dying person, the indulgence is the same. When (205) this chaplet is said by the bedside of a dying person, God‟s anger is placated, unfathomable mercy envelops the soul, and the very depths of My tender mercy are moved for the sake of the sorrowful Passion of My Son.

Everything Is Obtainable

1128   May 22, 1937. The heat is so intense today that it is difficult to bear. We are all thirsting for rain, and still it does not come. For several days the sky has been overcast, but there is no rain. When I looked at the plants, thirsting for the rain I was moved with pity, and I decided to say the chaplet until the Lord would send us rain. Before supper, the sky covered over with clouds, and a heavy rain fell on the earth. I had been saying this prayer without interruption for three hours. And the Lord let me know that everything can be obtained by means of this prayer.

1541   My daughter, encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given to you. It pleases Me to grant everything they ask of Me by saying the chaplet. When hardened sinners say it, I will fill their souls with peace, and the hour of their death will be a happy one.

Write this for the benefit of distressed souls; when a soul sees and realized the gravity of its sins, when the whole abyss of the misery into which it immersed itself is displayed before its eyes, let it not despair, but with trust let it throw itself into the arms of My mercy, as a child into the arms of its beloved mother. These souls (125) have a right of priority to My compassionate Heart, they have first access to My mercy. Tell them that no soul that has called upon My mercy has been disappointed or brought to shame. I delight particularly in a soul which has placed its trust in My goodness.

Write that when they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the merciful Savior.

Mercy

848   While I was saying the chaplet, I heard a voice which said, Oh, what great graces I will grant to souls who say this chaplet; the very depths of My tender mercy are stirred for the sake of those who say the chaplet. Write down these words, My daughter. Speak to the world about My mercy; let all mankind recognize My unfathomable mercy. It is a sign for the end times; after it will come the day of justice. While there is still time, let them have recourse to the fount of My mercy; let them profit from the Blood and Water which gushed forth for them.

Condemns No One

1452   When the clock struck twelve, my soul immersed itself more deeply in recollection, and I heard a voice in my soul: (63) Do not fear, My little child, you are not alone. Fight bravely, because My arm is supporting you; fight for the salvation of souls, exhorting them to trust in My mercy, as that is your task in this life and in the life to come. After these words, I received a deeper understanding of divine mercy. Only that soul who wants it will be damned, for God condemns no one.

Vessel of Graces

327   Once my confessor [Father Sopocko] asked me where the inscription should be placed, because there was not enough space in the picture for everything. In answered, “I will pray and give you an answer next week.” When I left the confessional and was passing before the Blessed Sacrament, I received an inner understanding about the inscription. Jesus reminded me of what He had told me the
first time; namely, that these three words must be clearly in evidence: “Jesus, I trust in You.” [“Jezu, Ufam Tobie.”] I understood that Jesus wanted the whole formula to be there, but He gave no direct orders to this effect as He did for these three words.

I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: “Jesus, I trust in You.

“Last Hope” of salvation

687   Once, as I was going down the hall to the kitchen, I heard these words in my soul: Say unceasingly the chaplet that I have taught you. Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most
hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire that the whole world know My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy.

965   Jesus looked at me and said, Souls perish in spite of My bitter Passion. I am giving them the last hope of salvation; that is, the Feast of My Mercy255. If they will not adore My mercy, they will perish for all eternity. Secretary of My mercy, write, tell souls about this great mercy of Mine, because the awful day, the day of My justice, is near.

998   Today, I took part in a one-day retreat. When I was at the last conference,177 the priest was speaking of how much the world needs God’s mercy, and that this seems to be a special time when people have great need of prayer and God’s mercy. Then I heard a voice in my soul: These words are for you. Do all you possibly can for this work of My mercy. I desire that My mercy be worshiped, and I am giving mankind the last hope of salvation; that is, recourse to My mercy. My Heart rejoices in this feast. After these words, I understood that nothing can dispense me from the obligation which
the Lord demands from me.

Mercy Excludes No One

1182   Today the Lord said to me, My daughter, My pleasure and delight, nothing will stop me from  granting you graces. Your misery does not hinder my mercy. My daughter, write that the greater the misery of a soul, the greater its right to My mercy; [urge] all souls to trust in the unfathomable abyss of My mercy, because I want to save them all. On the cross, the fountain of My mercy was opened wide by
the lance for all souls – no one have I excluded!

Confession Advice to Sr. Faustina

1602   Today the Lord said to me, Daughter, when you go to confession, to this fountain of My mercy, the Blood and Water which came forth from My Heart always flows down upon your soul and ennobles it. Every time you go to confession, immerse yourself entirely in My mercy, with great trust, so that I may pour the bounty of My grace upon your soul. When you approach the confessional, know this, that I Myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest, but I Myself act in your soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy. Tell souls that from this fount of mercy (7) souls draw graces solely with the vessel of trust. If their trust is great, there is no limit to My generosity. The torrents of grace inundate humble souls. The proud remain always in poverty and misery, because My grace turns away from them to humble souls.

1725   The Lord has been teaching me, once again, how I am to approach the Sacrament of Penance: My daughter, just as you prepare in My presence, so also you make your confession before Me. The person of the priest is, for Me, only a screen. Never analyze what sort of a (89) priest it is that I am making use of; open your soul in confession as you would to Me, and I will fill it with My light.

Conclusion

The Divine Mercy Chaplet is a timeless prayer that asks one thing of us: trust in the boundless mercy of Jesus Christ. Prayed faithfully — at three o’clock, in times of fear, or at the bedside of the dying — it draws us again and again to the fountain of His mercy for ourselves, for those we love, and for the whole world. May we keep praying it with confidence, seeking the intercession of Jesus, the Merciful Savior, for the salvation of souls. Amen.

Yes — it is one of the most powerful prayers in the Catholic tradition, not because of magic but because of the promises Our Lord attached to it and the trust it asks of us. It is prayed for mercy in this life and, above all, at the hour of death. See the Promises of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy section above for the full list.
