The Joyful Mysteries: The Birth of Jesus in Prayer

The Annunciation
The Annunciation - Carl Heinrich Bloch - 1890
Table of Contents

The Joyful Mysteries is the first Mysteries of the Rosary. It begins with Opening Prayers of which there are nine individual ones.  Next come five decades, or scriptural events in the life of Jesus and Mary.  Each decade has accompanying prayers also of which there are four.  And the Joyful Mysteries end with four Closing Prayers.

The Rosary was given to St. Dominic by the Holy Trinity through the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1214 according to St. Louis de Montfort.  “It was only in the year 1214, however, that the Church received the Rosary in its present form and according to the method we use today.  It was given to the Church by St.  Dominic, who had received it from the Blessed Virgin as a means of converting the Albigensians and other sinners.”1

We have available to anyone, a downloadable, printable, guide for the Joyful Mysteries in pdf format. It is free to download and share and can be printed and used when praying the Rosary and is an excellent aid for anyone, especially for beginners.  The author still uses this guide after ten years.

What are the decades (or events) of the Joyful Mysteries?

Decades are gospel events in the life of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The decades of the Joyful Msyteries range from the Annunciation of Mary through Finding Jesus in the Temple at age twelve after the Passover celebration. What are the decades or Events? They are listed below. Click the icon to explode the view. The scriptural references are included in bold.

Luke 1:26-38

The Angel Gabriel appears to a virgin girl in Nazareth named Mary (the daughter of Anne and Joachim) and petitions her involvement in the incarnation of Jesus (the Messiah).  At this time, she is betrothed to Joseph. Mary gives her consent.

Luke 1:39-56

Mary visits Elizabeth (wife of Zechariah), her cousin, who, in her old age, is also pregnant with John the Baptist. Elizabeth identifies Mary as the Mother of her Lord.

Luke 2:1-20

Joseph and Mary journey to Bethlehem, where the birth of Jesus takes place as foretold in the Old Testament. Shepherds are told of the Event by an Angel and they travel to Bethlehem and witness the child.

Luke 2:41-52

Joseph and Mary take the infant Jesus to Jerusalem for his circumcision on the eighth day after his birth.  There they meet Simeon and also atone for their sins according to the Mosaic law.

Luke 2:41-52

The Holy Family travels to Jerusalem for the Passover when Jesus is 12 years old. Mary and Joseph traveling back to Nazareth cannot locate Jesus and travel back to Jerusalem after a day’s journey.  There they find Him instructing the doctors (teachers).

What are the Traditional Prayers of the Joyful Mysteries?

There sixty-six total prayers that are said in each Rosary regardless of the Mystery.  One Our Father, ten Hail Mary’s, one Glory Be, and one Fatima Prayer are repeated for each Rosay decade.

That may sound like a lot of prayers, but the Rosary will change your life if you devote yourself to it. The rewards far outweigh the work that is put into it.

O My Dearest Mother Mary, behold me your child in prayer at your feet. Accept this Holy Rosary, which I offer you in accordance with your requests at Fatima, as a proof of my tender love for you, for the intentions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in atonement for the offenses committed against your Immaculate Heart, and for this special favor which I humbly request in This Rosary.

(Mention your request here)

I beg you to present my petition to your Divine Son. I ask it for the greater glory, of GOD, for your honor, and the good of all Souls. If you will pray for me, I cannot be refused.  I know, dearest Mother, that you want me to seek GOD’s Holy Will concerning my request. If what I ask for should not be granted, pray that I may receive that which will be of greater benefit to my soul. Sweet heart of Mary be my Salvation, Amen.

In the Name Of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.  (As you say this, with your right hand touch your forehead when you say Father, touch your breastbone when you say Son, touch your left shoulder when you say Holy, and touch your right shoulder when you say Spirit.)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.  Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

“O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of your mercy.”

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley, of tears. Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

“My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I beg pardon of You for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You.”

What are the Benefits of Praying the Joyful Mysteries?

One can obtain many benefits through the recitation of the Holy Rosary and some are listed below.

Decrease of Sin

Bishop Hugh Doyle, a twentieth-century bishop, is quoted as saying,  “No one can live continually in sin and continue to say the Rosary: either they will give up sin or they will give up the Rosary.”

Slowly, I noticed a decrease in my sinful thoughts and actions due to the Rosary. It was gradual. Maybe after six weeks or so, I noticed that a few of my sinful habits had disappeared and that I was no longer interested in them. Some I had to work on, but with the help of Our Lady, those are also gone. If I wanted her assistance, I had to ask for it due to her respect for my free will.

Conversion

Since I began with the Rosary in June 2012, I have not drifted from it. It has provided me with protection and has been instrumental in my conversion. I would not be where I am today, or at all for that matter, without the Rosary and the Virgin Mary. As I have read stories of other people depicting temptations from the evil one, I experienced this also. Some of it was hard; at times, I thought I would never make it through and could envision myself giving up. Still, I prayed the Rosary every day, seven days a week. It took seven years in all to accomplish my conversion.

Others

To this day, the Rosary has protected me as my spiritual journey has been long. True repentance has also been a part of this journey, but there were  sins that I could not get past and they remained. Only after joining the church and having access to confession did Our Lady nudge me into giving a full-life confession. My increased faith and belief in what was shown to me along my journey were a by-product of my prayer life.

There are many, many reasons to practice the Rosary daily. There was one more important to me than the others. Our Lady quotes from Locutions to the World on April 9, 2011, in the message titled “Our Lady speaks to the Nations.” Addressing Latin America, she states:

“I give you the Rosary. The Rosary will link you to one another and will chain you to me. Yes, chain you to me with chains of love which will never be broken.”

One more reason we should be praying the Rosary is because Our Lady asks us to.  Most people realize that today things seem to be headed in the wrong direction and that there is something is just not right, but maybe cannot put their finger on it.

This is all the more reason to resume, or begin for the first time, praying this most powerful prayer. All of Heaven knows what is coming to the world and I have seen request upon request to pray the Rosary everyday.

On which days are the Joyful Mysteries Prayed?

Each day of the week requires a different Rosary Mystery.  With the traditional rosary (which does not include the Luminous Mysteries), the Joyful Mysteries are prayed on Monday, Thursday, Sundays of Advent (four Sundays before Christmas), Christmastide (December 25 – January 5), and Time After Epiphany (January 6 – Sunday before Ash Wednesday).

Praying from the Heart - The Key to the Birth of Jesus in Prayer

What is praying from the heart? Our Lady explains it very well in Locutions to the World on January 17, 2012.

How to Pray From the Heart
January 17, 2012

Mary

I put before you choices of life and death.  I am not speaking of earthly life and death, but of eternal life or eternal death.  These are the choices made each day.  Does a person wish to live with God forever or are they willing to lose eternal life because of some earthly satisfactions that are illicit? These are the daily decisions, life with God or life without God.

How horrible is life without God.  (That darkness begins on earth.) How blessed is life with God.  (That happiness begins on earth.) This is why I speak.  I want to lead many into eternal life.

God is not far away.  You need not travel a thousand miles to find him.  He is already in your heart.  Wherever you go, even when you flee from him, he is there, waiting for you to turn to him.  That is the secret.  That is all you need to do to find God.  Really God finds you.  Just turn your thoughts to him.  I will show you how.  Picture for a moment, a story from the gospel.  You know some stories.  If not, then read the gospels of Jesus.

Praying with the Imagination

Picture Jesus as a baby in my arms, or as a young boy in the temple, or being baptized in the Jordan, or preaching to the crowds, or praying in the Garden or dying on the cross.  Any of these scenes will do, whatever you are attracted to.  Use your imagination for a few moments and speak to Jesus from your heart.  It might only be a short prayer but it will be from the heart.  Congratulations.  You have begun to walk the road of divine light.  Be led to do this often.  Just a short prayer where you picture Jesus and speak to him from your heart.  That is truly a turning to God.  Do not forget, I will always be there with you.

Comment: The teachings these past few days have led the person from darkness into light, and now Mary explains how to walk in that light.

As we are praying the prayers from each Decade (i.e., the Nativity of Jesus), we think about the events that we read in the scriptures. If you are new to the Rosary, then this will be hard at first.  But we need to keep this end goal in mind … Praying from the Heart.

How are the Joyful Mysteries applied in one's life?

I believe there are two basic ways to apply the Joyful Mysteries. First of all, you can find a situation that occurs in one of the events and apply it to your own life (most of us do this in our spiritual journey somewhere along the way).  There is also another way … through devotion.

Through devotion, the Rosary will become part of our daily lives.  We spend time every day in the Rosary. If you do this, you may be surprised at what happens. I was surprised when I started this practice – many things changed all for the better.

1st Decade - Annunciation of Mary

Annunciation of Mary
The Annunciation Bartolomé Esteban Perez Murillo 1665 - 1660
Luke 1: 26-38

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel being come in, said unto her, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women.”  Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.

And the angel said to her, “Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God. Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the most-High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father. And he shall reign in the house of Jacob forever. And of his kingdom there shall be no end.”

Mary said to the angel “How shall this be done because I know not man?” And the angel answering, said to her, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most-High shall overshadow thee. Therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. Behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren because no word shall be impossible with God.” And Mary said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word.” And the angel departed from her.

2nd Decade - The Visitation

The Visitation of Mary - Joyful Mysteries
The Meeting of Mary and Elisabeth - Carl Heinrich Bloch - 1866
Luke 1: 39-56

And Mary rising-up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda. And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth.

And it came to pass, that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.

And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name. And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him. He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy: As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever.

And Mary abode with her about three months; and she returned to her own house.

3rd Decade - Nativity of Jesus

Nativity of Jesus
The Holy Night Nativity - Antonio da Correggio - 1522-1530
Luke 2:1-20

And it came to pass, that in those days there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that the whole world should be enrolled. This enrolling was first made by Cyrinus, the governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, everyone into his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child. And it came to pass, that when they were there, her days were accomplished, that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds watching, and keeping the night watches over their flock. And behold an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the brightness of God shone round about them; and they feared with a great fear. And the angel said to them: Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, that shall be to all the people: For, this day, is  born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David. And this shall be a sign unto you. You shall find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army, praising God, and saying: Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to men of good will.

And it came to pass, after the angels departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another: Let us go over to Bethlehem, and let us see this word that is come to pass, which the Lord hath shewed to us. And they came with haste; and they found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. And seeing, they understood of the word that had been spoken to them concerning this child. And all that heard, wondered; and at those things that were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God, for all the things they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

4th Decade - Presentation of Jesus at the Temple

Presentation of Jesus in the Temple - Joyful Mysteries
Presentation of Christ in the Temple - Hans Hoblein the Elder - 1500
Luke 2:21-40

And after eight days were accomplished, that the child should be circumcised, his name was called Jesus, which was called by the angel, before he was conceived in the womb. And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord: As it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord: And to offer a sacrifice, according as it is written in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

And behold there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Ghost was in him. And he had received an answer from the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. And he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when his parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, He also took him into his arms, and blessed God, and said: Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace; Because my eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples: A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

And his father and mother were wondering at those things which were spoken concerning him.  And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: Behold this child is set for the fall, and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted; And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.

And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser; she was far advanced in years, and had lived with her husband seven years from her virginity. And she was a widow until fourscore and four years; who departed not from the temple, by fastings and prayers serving night and day. Now she, at the same hour, coming in, confessed to the Lord; and spoke of him to all that looked for the redemption of Israel. And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their city Nazareth.

And the child grew, and waxed strong, full of wisdom; and the grace of God was in him.

Jesus Found in the Temple - James Tissot - 1886-1894
Luke 2:41-52

And his parents went every year to Jerusalem, at the solemn day of the pasch, And when he was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast, And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not.

And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day’s journey, and sought him among their kinsfolks and acquaintances. And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers.

And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? did you not know, that I must be about my father’s business? And they understood not the word that he spoke unto them.

And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and age, and grace with God and men.

Additional Prayers to the Joyful Mysteries

Dolorosa - Our Lady of Sorrows
Dolorosa - Bartolome Esteban Murillo - 1660

From time to time, I like to append a couple of prayers to the Joyful Mysteries to Our Lady. One is a prayer taken from the Litany of Our Lady of Sorrows.  The other is the Memorare.

From Our Lady of Sorrows

Imprint, O Lady, thy wounds upon my heart, that I may read therein sorrow and love: sorrow, to endure every sorrow for thee; love, to despise every love for thee.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection,
implored your help, or sought your intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen.
