The Crucifixion of Christ

The Crucifixion of Christ
Crucifixion - Cornelis Massijs - 1600-1650

The Crucifixion of Christ is the fifth decade of the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, one of the most powerful prayers given to us from above.  It is contains all scriptures concerning the crucifixion that are contained in the New Testament.

Scripture

John 19: 25-27

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen.

When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son.

After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own.

All scriptures referencing The Crucifixion are included here due to the fact that we deem it important to understand more completely the suffering that Christ went through on our behalf.

Matthew 27:33-56
The Crucifixion

And they came to the place that is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary.

And they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall. When he had tasted, he would not drink.

After they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: They divided my garments among them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.

They sat and watched him.

And they put over his head his cause written: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Then were crucified with him two thieves: one on the right hand, and one on the left.

Jesus Mocked

And they that passed by, blasphemed him, wagging their heads,

And saying: Vah, thou that destroyest the temple of God, and in three days dost rebuild it: save thy own self: if thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

In like manner also the chief priests, with the scribes and ancients, mocking, said: He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

He trusted in God; let him now deliver him if he will have him; for he said: I am the Son of God.

And the selfsame thing the thieves also, that were crucified with him, reproached him with.

Death of Jesus

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole earth, until the ninth hour.

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Some that stood there and heard, said: This man calleth Elias.

And immediately one of them running took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar; and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

The others said: Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to deliver him.

And Jesus again crying with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

Behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent. The graves were opened: and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose, And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, came into the holy city, and appeared to many.

Luke: 23: 33-56
Jesus Crucified

And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, they crucified him there; and the robbers, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. But they, dividing his garments, cast lots.

Jesus Mocked

And the people stood beholding, and the rulers with them derided him, saying: He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the elect of God.

The soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, And saying: If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

And there was also a superscription written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

The Robbers Converse

And one of those robbers who were hanged, blasphemed him, saying: If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

But the other answering, rebuked him, saying: Neither dost thou fear God, seeing thou art condemned under the same condemnation?

And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done no evil.

He said to Jesus: Lord, remember me when thou shalt come into thy kingdom.

And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise.

Death of Jesus

It was almost the sixth hour; and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

Jesus crying out with a loud voice, said: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And saying this, he gave up the ghost.

Josephus and the Burial of Jesus

Now the centurion, seeing what was done, glorified God, saying: Indeed this was a just man.

And all the multitude of them that were come together to that sight, and saw the things that were done, returned striking their breasts.

And all his acquaintance, and the women that had followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

Behold there was a man named Joseph, who was a counsellor, a good and just man, (The same had not consented to their counsel and doings;) of Arimathea, a city of Judea; who also himself looked for the kingdom of God.

This man went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

And taking him down, he wrapped him in fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre that was hewed in stone, wherein never yet any man had been laid.

It was the day of the Parasceve, and the sabbath drew on.

The women that were come with him from Galilee, following after, saw the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

And returning, they prepared spices and ointments; and on the sabbath day they rested, according to the commandment.
